Mr Putin and Mr Sampaio discussed international efforts to combat terrorism. The Presidents also focused on the future of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Angolan peace settlement and bilateral economic cooperation.
Three Russian-Portuguese agreements, namely a consular convention, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between foreign ministries and a protocol on transferring Russian archives from Portugal to Russia, were signed in the presence of both leaders.
President Putin accepted an invitation from President Sampaio to visit Portugal in 2002.
The Russian President told journalists after the talks that he was quite optimistic about the future of the OSCE. Mr Putin said more harmonious relations in Europe and the world had increased the OSCE’s chances of tackling specific problems in accordance with its charter.
