A total of around 6,000 servicemen from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states, including around 2,000 from Russia, 1,700 from China, a company each from Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, and a special forces’ platoon from Kyrgyzstan, took part in the SCO Peace Mission 2007 counterterrorist training exercise in the Lake Chebarkul district in Chelyabinsk Region.

The SCO heads of state watched the final phase of the exercise.

Speaking after the exercise, which he assessed as another step towards strengthening ties between the SCO member states aimed at bolstering international peace and security, President Vladimir Putin said that the SCO military commanders and specialists had displayed good possibilities and organisational ability. Mr Putin congratulated everyone involved on the exercises’ excellent organisation and successful completion.
