Dmitry Medvedev and Taro Aso discussed the situation concerning the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and its having conducted an underground nuclear test, launched short-range missiles and declared the resumption of its nuclear programmes.
Both sides agreed that it is necessary to respond seriously to these actions, since they represent a challenge to the international security system. They expressed their intention to coordinate work on appropriate measures capable of resolving the current situation, which will be included in a new [UN] Security Council resolution.
A number of topical issues concerning the further development of bilateral cooperation were also discussed. At the same time Dmitry Medvedev drew attention to the need to refrain from public statements and rhetoric concerning sensitive issues in Russian-Japanese relations. Taro Aso indicated that he understood the President's position.
