Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Putin said that the International Youth Games should promote the development of sports in this country and the international Olympic movement. He also said that Moscow was glad to play host to 6,000 sportsmen from CIS and Baltic countries and wished success to all the participants in the games.
Prior to the opening ceremony, the Russian President met with Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee.
