Vladimir Putin gave a positive assessment of the results of the second Caspian Summit in Tehran, in which he participated along with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, and President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev.
The summit participants agreed on that the littoral states will benefit from the sovereign use of the Caspian Sea, including sub-soil extraction. Navigation on the Caspian Sea should only take place under the flags of the littoral states.
The heads of state also agreed to intensify their economic cooperation.
Vladimir Putin emphasised that environmental safety should be the touchstone for judging the appropriateness of all projects in the Caspian Sea, particularly with respect to extracting and transporting energy resources.
The President of Russia considers that ensuring security and stability in the region is a priority area of the countries' cooperation, and this includes maritime safety, protection of oil and gas installations, as well as the joint struggle against international terrorism and extremism.
