At the meeting with the Portuguese President, the two leaders discussed bilateral trade, economic and political relations and international affairs. The two Presidents made press statements and answered questions from the media following their talks.

Mr Putin then met with Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates.

Earlier, upon arriving in Lisbon, Mr Putin was met by Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva during an official welcome ceremony which took place on Empire Square.

Mr Putin laid a wreath at the grave of outstanding Portuguese poet Luis Camoes in the Jeronimos Monastery and visited the monastery and its main church, Santa Maria de Belen.

That evening, Mr Putin and Mr Cavaco Silva visited the exhibition ‘From Peter the Great to Nicholas II: Russian imperial art and culture in the Hermitage collection’ in the Don Luis Gallery at the Ajuda Palace. The exhibition was organised by the Hermitage Museum in close cooperation with Portuguese museum staff. Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the Hermitage Museum, showed the two Presidents through the exhibition.

The two Presidents then attended a concert by Russian pianist Sergei Markarov at the Ajuda Palace.

Concluding the visit, Mr Cavaco Silva and his wife, Maria Cavaco Silva, hosted a dinner in Mr Putin’s honour.
