Speaking at the closing session of United Russia’s eighth party congress, President Vladimir Putin said that there are many more unresolved problems than there are achievements. It is important now to fulfil the promises made to people, carry out the planned development programmes, lay pride and ambition aside and work with absolute and total commitment.
Mr Putin said that if Dmitry Medvedev is elected Russia’s new president he would be willing to take the post of prime minister, without any changes made to the distribution of powers between the president and the government.
The United Russia congress approved Mr Medvedev as the party’s candidate in the March 2008 presidential election.
