Mr Putin congratulated Mr Aliev on his birthday.
Both leaders were very positive in their assessment of the level of bilateral cooperation Russia and Azerbaijan have achieved in a wide range of areas and said they were sure relations between the two countries would continue to develop.
The two presidents also exchanged best wishes to the Russian and Azerbaijani peoples as the New Year approaches.
The telephone conversation took place on Russia’s initiative.
Earlier, Mr Putin sent a telegram to congratulations to Mr Aliev on his birthday, saying, in particular:
“Azerbaijan has made considerable progress in its economic development and has strengthened its authority in the international community over the years that you have been in office as head of state. We value the fact that you have made fruitful and mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia, which the good personal relations between us have also helped to develop, one of your priorities.
I am sure that continued development of effective political, economic and humanitarian cooperation between our countries is in the interests of our peoples and will contribute to peace and stability in the Caucasus”.
