The ceremony took place on the Bulgarian capital’s central square, named after St Alexander Nevsky.
Mr Putin and Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov inspected an honour guard and an orchestra played the two countries’ national anthems.
Following the ceremony, Mr Putin laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, which also stands in the square.
