At the congress of United Russia Vladimir Putin agreed to assume the chairmanship of the party after the expiry of his presidential term.
Speaking to delegates at the congress, Vladimir Putin noted that it was perfectly normal and natural in democratic nations for the head of a party to serve as Prime Minister. He confirmed that he had accepted the proposal of Russia’s President-elect, Dmitry Medvedev, to head the Government of the Russian Federation in accordance with the timeframe stipulated in the Constitution.
The President recalled that the head of the Russian Government cannot function without the support of the parliament and the regions. He also noted that the organisational structure of the party can be an important source of influence and feedback.
Vladimir Putin promised to reform the party by making it more open to discussions, ensuring its responsiveness to the views of voters, and eliminate from its ranks people who are simply there to pursue their selfish interests.
