The President laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall and also laid flowers at the monuments to the hero cities.
Later in the day, Mr Medvedev presented certificates conferring the title of City of Military Glory on Vyazma, Kronstadt and Naro-Fominsk for the courage, steadfastness and mass heroism the defenders of these towns displayed in fighting for their homeland’s freedom and independence.
Nineteen Russian towns and cities now bear the title City of Military Glory. Earlier presidential executive orders conferred the title on Belgorod, Voronezh, Velikiye Luki, Veliky Novgorod, Vladikavkaz, Dmitrov, Yelnya, Yelets, Kursk, Malgobek, Luga, Orel, Polyarny, Rzhev, Rostov-on-Don, and Tuapse.
The President also attended a concert celebrating the 64th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.
