Opening the meeting, President Medvedev stressed that the situation concerning road safety remains unsatisfactory as every day dozens of people die in car accidents in Russia.
According to Mr Medvedev this state of affairs is a result of problems that have not been resolved comprehensively, namely traffic control, road conditions, and the responsibility of drivers.
Dmitry Medvedev announced his intention to hold a meeting of the State Council Presidium on the issue of road safety and instructed those present to prepare concrete proposals. He also requested the Government Commission on Traffic Safety to assume responsibility for the issues at hand.
Issues related to improving emergency medical assistance to road accident victims and reforming driver training and education were also discussed.
In July 2009 President Medvedev discussed measures to ensure road safety at a meeting with permanent members of the Security Council.
