“The Arctic is rich in minerals and energy resources, and the Northern Sea Route, which passes through it, is the shortest shipping route linking Europe and Asia. Therefore, the region’s sustainable development based on cooperation and unconditional respect for international law has paramount importance. The environmental issues of the North remain a top priority.
Russia is ready to continue its efforts for the preservation of the Arctic’s unique nature, the implementation of joint projects in transport and mining industries, and strengthening of near-border cooperation.
I am confident that the initiatives drafted during your meeting and the conference Security and Cooperation in the Arctic — New Frontier will be a major contribution to tackling these challenges.”
