Mr Medvedev commemorated the memory of the fallen in the Great Patriotic War by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall.
Also taking part in the ceremony, which commemorated the 67th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War, were Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and members of both houses of parliament.
The ceremony ended with a ceremonial march by the Guard of Honour. Mr Medvedev then spoke with war veterans who had gathered at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
June 22 – the day that marked the start of the Great Patriotic War – has been declared the Day of Memory and Sorrow by the decree of President Eltsin in 1996.
