The message reads, in part:
“It is symbolic that you are meeting just at the time when the Russian Geographical Society, one of the oldest in the world, is celebrating its anniversary. Established 170 years ago, the Russian Geographical Society brings together people of learning and creative talent, who love their Fatherland and work sincerely for its future. The society has made a truly invaluable contribution to studying little explored parts of Russia and the world, and has done much for broad public education. Naturally, one of the Russian Geographical Society’s biggest priorities has always been to strengthen ties with colleagues from abroad and play an active part in international expeditions and scientific projects.
I am sure that your conference, which brings together renowned scholars, and is taking place with the RGS’s active support, will be an influential forum for interesting and productive discussions on the biggest issues before geographical science today, issues such as climate change, studying and preserving the unique nature of the Arctic and Antarctic, and many others. This event will facilitate exchange of experience and practice, and consolidate the global professional community.”
