The President instructed Minister of the Interior Rashid Nurgaliyev, Director of the Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and Chairman of the Prosecutor General's Office Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin, to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attack and to prepare proposals that could become law in order to continue the fight against crime in the south of Russia, particularly in the Caucasus.
Mr Medvedev also announced that he had dispatched Deputy Interior Minister Arkady Yedelev to Ingushetia to coordinate on a temporary basis all services and departments of the Interior Ministry in the Republic.
On the morning of August 17, 2009 a truck driven by a suicide bomber entered the compound of the Department of the Interior for Nazran City and Nazran County, as officers were reporting for inspection, and subsequently exploded. Initial reports indicate that 20 people were killed and 138 more injured, including ten children. Dmitry Medvedev expressed his condolences to the relatives of the victims.
