Taking part in the ceremony were Patriarch Kirill Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia of Moscow and All Russia, Head of the Russian Old Believers Church Metropolitan Cornelius, Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar, Chief Mufti and Chairman of the Central Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Russia Talgat Tadzhuddin, Chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia Ravil Gainutdin, Head of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia Damba Ayusheyev, Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Russia Dietrich Brauer, members of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations and representatives of youth organisations.

After the ceremony, the President had a brief conversation with the religious leaders and representatives of youth organisations.

National Unity Day was established in 2005 to commemorate the events of 1612, when a people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from foreign occupation.
