The issues facing Russia’s education system and the support system for schoolteachers were the subjects of discussion.
The President noted that 2010 has been declared Year of the Teacher in Russia, and this will be an added incentive to invest money and attention in the country’s schools.
Today’s schoolchildren need to receive as much knowledge as possible, because only then will Russia be competitive, the President said.
First place in the national Teacher of the Year competition went to Natalya Nikiforova, a maths teacher from the Urals city of Magnitogorsk. Mr Medvedev presented her with the Crystal Pelican, the competition’s main award.
Russia marks Teachers’ Day on October 5.
