The message reads, in part:
“For centuries, Voronezh has played a significant role in the country’s development and strengthening of the Russian state, redounding to its military glory. But very special and memorable chapters in the city’s history were written during the Great Patriotic War. For more than two hundred days and nights, Voronezh defenders stood against the vicious enemy. Red Army soldiers and officers as well as militia, selflessly fought for every single street, every single building and every inch of home land, demonstrating unprecedented bravery and perseverance. Finally, on January 25, 1943, the city was liberated.
To a great extent, the fight for Voronezh determined the outcome of the Battle of Stalingrad and all the major battles in 1943. They were an important step towards the Great Victory.
These days, the capital of Russia’s black soil region holds the proud title of the City of Military Glory. Voronezh residents are hard workers who honour the traditions of many past generations and cherish the memory of the liberators’ heroism.
I would like to extend my most sincere greetings to the war veterans. Thank you for your courage and valour, for the peaceful skies above us, for the happiness of living and working in a strong and safe country.”
