The President noted in his message of greetings that the treaty establishing the Union State was one of the biggest milestones in Russia’s and Belarus’ recent history.
“This step”, Mr Medvedev said, “was motivated by our peoples’ desire to continue their rapprochement and build closer relations in economic, cultural and other areas of life. Our two countries’ integration cooperation will contribute to our steady development and above all help to raise our peoples’ living standards and quality of life.
Much has been accomplished in the ten years since the treaty was signed. Today, we are moving consistently towards establishing a common customs and economic space, closely coordinating our efforts on the international stage and in security, and working on guaranteeing equal rights for citizens of both countries.
We still have big tasks ahead. Their implementation is in the hands of our peoples. I am sure that if we remain firmly committed to the principles of building our union we will make successful progress in the interests of a prosperous Russia and Belarus.”
