The new START treaty was the main topic of discussion between the presidents. Both leaders made note of the progress in talks on this subject.
The President of Russia emphasised that the two countries’ positions are very similar and that nearly all the issues discussed in the recent months have been resolved. Only a few technical details still require further negotiation.
Dmitry Medvedev expressed hope that the entire process will be completed fairly soon.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference.
