The state policy concept with regards to the Russian Cossacks is designed to ensure the development and establishment of public and other services for Cossacks, help Cossacks preserve their identity, traditions and culture, and develop the potential of Cossack societies and associations of Russian Cossacks in the interests of national security and the territorial integrity of Russia.
Today there are more than 740 thousand Cossacks in the public registry of Cossack societies of Russia, further divided into 10 military and 6 district Cossack societies.
Cossacks actively promote local issues based on the interests of the population and taking into account historical and local traditions. Their representatives participate in the work of legislative and executive powers.
