Chinese President Hu Jintao thanked Russia for helping to overcome the consequences of the disastrous earthquake, and for inviting children from the earthquake-affected regions to spend a summer vacation in Russia. Dmitry Medvedev offered this invitation during his recent visit to China. About a thousand Chinese children will have an opportunity to spend their summer vacation in different Russian regions.
Both leaders were pleased with the bilateral efforts to create an additional mechanism for coordinating energy policies at the deputy prime minister level.
They also spoke about the importance of developing high-tech cooperation, and encouraging trade expansion.
They also discussed humanitarian cooperation, in particular preparations for the conduct of the Russian Language Year in China. Mr Medvedev wished Chinese leaders and the Chinese public good luck in hosting the Olympics.
The two leaders reaffirmed their intention to meet at a regular summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in August to discuss the SCO’s plan for 2009 to 2012, and at a top-level meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Peru in late November.
