Igor Spassky, an outstanding designer of nuclear submarines and longtime head of the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering, passed away at the age of 98.
Igor Spassky is a winner of the Lenin Prize and the State Prize of the USSR, the State Prize of the Russian Federation; he was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Hero of Socialist Labor and Hero of the Russian Federation.
Over 200 nuclear and diesel-electric submarines, including strategic nuclear submarine cruisers and nuclear-powered underwater missile cruisers, have been built as per the designs created under Igor Spassky’s guidance.
