The main subjects discussed were reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and road accidents.
Mrs Golikova outlined the measures the Ministry is taking to address these issues. She said that 12 regional and 36 municipal high-technology cardiovascular treatment centres have already been set up. Deaths from cardiovascular disease, currently one million a year, are expected to drop by 150,000 in 2009.
As part of the road safety project, medical establishments located along federal highways are being provided with the necessary equipment and ambulances for treating road accident victims. The Ministry estimates that carrying out the road safety project will reduce the road toll 1.5-fold over the next two years, bringing it down from 24,000 to 16,000.
Mr Medvedev instructed Mrs Golikova to keep the implementation of these programmes under constant control.
