In the run-up to the G8 and G20 summits in Canada, and with France due to take over the presidency of these groups in 2011, Mr Medvedev and Mr Sarkozy also discussed a wide range of issues related to coordinating international efforts to reform the global financial system.
The two Presidents also exchanged views on European security issues, taking into consideration Russia’s European Security Treaty initiative, the new NATO strategic concept, the situation in the Middle East, and the situation with the Iranian nuclear programme.
The two Presidents concluded their talks by overseeing the signing of a number of cooperation agreements in the oil, gas, aerospace, and transport sectors.
Mr Medvedev and Mr Sarkozy then made press statements and answered journalists’ questions.
Earlier in the day, the two Presidents met with members of the Russian and French business communities, where they discussed implementation of the most important joint projects and the prospects for future cooperation between the two countries’ leading companies. Difficulties hampering economic cooperation and complicating business activities were the subject of particular attention.
