Beginning of Meeting with President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic

February 26, 2009
19:13
The Kremlin, Moscow

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev: Mr President!

I am very happy to welcome you. And of course, first and foremost, I would like to congratulate you on your award [“For the outstanding activity in strengthening the unity of Orthodox Christian Nations”], which will be given to you by our Foundation for the Unity of Orthodox Christian Nations. I believe that this is a great event; not only is it pleasant, but it is also significant in that it demonstrates the level of our relations, and it shows the historical and religious kinship between our people. I think that this is a very good reason to meet, to chat, to discuss the current state of relations between Russia and Montenegro, to talk about our economic ties, our investments, our humanitarian contacts and, of course, other issues, including those related to European security and several other problems.

I am happy to greet you once again here in the Kremlin. Welcome to Russia.

President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic (as translated): Thank you, Mr President, for finding the time to meet with me.

Thank you for your congratulations, for this acknowledgement. I perceive this as another good sign of the relations between two friendly nations that have historically been close, that are currently very close, and that will continue to be close in the future. I agree with you that this is a good cause to see each other, and I would like to thank you once again for finding the time for this meeting.

I would particularly like to express my satisfaction with our relations. Russia has always been first on our list of priorities. Our country has always had particular expectations in relation to Russia; we have always developed friendly cooperation, and we have always had very good communication, economic contacts, and relations between our citizens.

We are very happy that there are active ties between our government bodies in all areas, in parliament and in the administration, and that cooperation is developing at a high rate.

I am also very happy about our good economic cooperation. I am happy that Russians are well-represented in Montenegro as investors and as guests, and that more and more Russians want to live in Montenegro. Our ties are showing that we are two close, friendly nations, and this is how we will remain in the future.

Dmitry Medvedev: Thank you.
