Opening Remarks at Russian-Mongolian Talks in an Expanded Format

August 25, 2009

Ulan Bator

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev: Dear Mr President Elbegdorj, dear Mongolian colleagues, I am very happy to make this trip to Mongolia on such a memorable occasion, because I'm sure that judged by both its content and certain aspects, this visit will be important historical one among those which bind our two countries together by many invisible threads. So I think that the celebrations [on the 70th anniversary of victory at the river Khalkin Gol] which will be held tomorrow will have a wide impact, will be very well received by our peoples, and this is the most important thing. Despite the fact that there are different points of view on this account, I think that the kind of victory our people achieved helped the development of our countries, contributed to their independence, and prevented a large number of threats, which stood at the time in front of our countries and humanity more generally, from becoming a reality. Therefore our duty is to commemorate this victory together and I was pleased to accept your invitation, Mr President, and come to Mongolia in order to spend these days together.

As for our relations, we have just held talks in a restricted format and discussed the projects in which we traditionally cooperate, and in which I hope we will continue to do so. On the other hand, we also talked about our prospects and the concerns we evidently need to resolve. I am sure that we have all the necessary resources to do so, the most important thing is political will as expressed in the determination of the two presidents to tackle the most difficult outstanding issues.

I think that today we will discuss a wide variety of issues. I am confident that during my visit new agreements that have been prepared will be signed; we just discussed some of them. I hope that as a result of our joint work we can bring Russian-Mongolian relations to a higher level, the level of a strategic partnership, which is in line with the aspirations of our peoples.

I would like once again, Mr President, to congratulate you on your election victory and to invite you to Russia, to make a visit to our country in turn.
