Ms Medvedeva laid flowers at the tragedy site and lit a candle in memory of the victims.

Victims’ relatives also attended the ceremony, as did Anna Komorowska, wife of Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.

Svetlana Medvedeva said that history has knitted close and lasting bonds between the Russian and Polish peoples and Russians share the Polish people’s grief and sorrow over the plane crash. “We are united in our common grief and the memory of the tragedy that took place here. All of us, the Russian President, the entire Russian people, and me personally, we were all deeply shaken by this terrible tragedy,” the First Lady said.

The Tu-154 plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski and an official delegation on their way to take part in memorial ceremonies in Katyn crashed near Smolensk on April 10, 2010, killing all 96 people on board, including the President and his wife.
