The international consultative meeting of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, the festival’s main organiser, voted unanimously to select Russia as the host country.
Mr Putin will meet with representatives of Russian organisations that are members of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, and student associations from a number of the country’s top universities. The meeting participants will brief the President on the upcoming preparations for the event, which is expected to attract at least 30,000 delegates from 140 countries.
The World Festival of Youth and Students was first held in 1947. It brings together around 160 youth organisations from more than 100 countries. The last festival took place in Ecuador in 2013. Moscow has hosted the event twice – in 1957 and in 1985.
