Pavel Kovalev and Viktor Orlov, winners of the President’s Prize in Science and Innovation for Young Scientists for 2011

February 6, 2012

Pavel Kovalev, 31, PhD, Associate Professor at St Petersburg State Polytechnical University, and Viktor Orlov, 31, PhD, Deputy Director for Research at the Prometey Central Research Institute of Structural Materials, received the award for developing the production technology for high-strength cold resistant steels to be used in the extraction and transportation of hydrocarbons in complex environmental conditions.

Pavel Kovalev and Viktor Orlov are specialists in metals and materials science, creators of innovative technologies for next-generation high-strength steels with unique performance features managed by the thermoplastic impact on their structure.

Pavel Kovalev and Viktor Orlov have designed the cold resistant steel technology (primarily for use in highly reliable energy installations on the Arctic shelf) that was implemented in flat steel production at the Izhora Pipe Mill, Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works and Cherepovets Steel Mill. It has been successfully used in the manufacture of steel structures for oil and gas platforms, Arctic and Prirazlomnaya (Pechora Sea), as well as the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta main gas pipeline.
