The 2025 State Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology has been awarded to Vladimir KRYLOV, Dmitry USACHEV, and Nikolai KONOVALOV for the development and implementation of innovative surgical methods for treating central nervous system diseases.
Vladimir Krylov was born on March 11, 1957, in Almetyevsk. He is a Doctor of Medical Sciences and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He serves as Director of the Institute of Functional Neurosurgery at the Russian Centre for Neurology and Neurosciences.
Dmitry Usachev was born on August 23, 1962, in Revda. He is a Doctor of Medical Sciences and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He serves as Director of the Academician Burdenko National Medical Research Centre for Neurosurgery of the Russian Ministry of Healthcare.
Nikolai Konovalov was born on May 14, 1971, in Moscow. He is a Doctor of Medical Sciences and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He serves as Deputy Director of the Academician Burdenko National Medical Research Centre for Neurosurgery of the Russian Ministry of Healthcare.
The team of researchers developed and introduced innovative methods for performing highly precise, radical, and safe surgical operations on the human brain and spinal cord. These advances have significantly reduced mortality rates, increased life expectancy, and enabled rapid social and professional rehabilitation of patients following surgery.
The team's research covers all major fields of modern neurosurgery, including the diagnosis and treatment of brain and spinal tumours, aneurysms, ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, congenital abnormalities of the skull and brain, and degenerative diseases of the spine.
The introduction and validation of these innovative technologies have secured their place in everyday clinical practice. Their inclusion in the clinical guidelines of the Russian Ministry of Healthcare has improved the quality of medical care throughout all regions of the Russian Federation.
The experience accumulated by the authors over the past 20 years has contributed to the formation of a modern Russian school of neurosurgery and the training of highly qualified specialists.
The 2025 State Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology has been awarded to Oleg ZHDANEYEV, Igor KOVSHOV, and Yelena KORSA-VAVILOVA for the creation of a domestically developed hydraulic fracturing system for oil and gas reservoirs.
Oleg Zhdaneyev was born on October 6, 1978, in Abakan. He holds a Doctor of Technical Sciences degree and serves as Senior Adviser at Promsyryeimport Foreign Economic Association JSC.
Igor Kovshov was born on February 3, 1955, in Petrokrepost. He is a Candidate of Technical Sciences and Chief Designer of the Scientific and Technical Division at Titan-Barrikady Federal Research and Production Centre.
Yelena Korsa-Vavilova was born on July 31, 1968, in Kirov. She is a Candidate of Technical Sciences and Head of Department at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology Corporation.
Today, hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is the principal method used to extract hard-to-recover oil reserves in Russia and worldwide, with more than 20,000 operations conducted annually. The importance of this technology for Russia’s oil and gas sector is expected to continue growing in the coming years as an increasing share of oil and gas reserves becomes more difficult to extract.
At present, most of the equipment and chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing operations, with the exception of propane, are imported. The team developed a new import-independent integrated system of specialised equipment for the Russian industry that enables hydraulic fracturing operations. All of the equipment was designed and is manufactured in Russia.
The project progressed through every stage, from the initial concept and technical specifications to the search for and development of innovative technological solutions, successful bench and industrial testing, and the launch of serial production.
The 2025 State Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology has been awarded to Alexei VASILYEV for his outstanding achievements in Oriental studies, the history of Arab countries, and international relations in the Middle East.
Alexei Vasilyev was born on April 26, 1939, in Leningrad. He is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Honorary President of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Alexei Vasilyev is a historian, sociologist, and political scientist. He is one of the leading figures in Russian Oriental studies, the world’s foremost expert on the history of Saudi Arabia, the founder of Russian school of Africanist political studies, and a scholar of encyclopaedic breadth who combines rigorous academic training with a profound understanding of contemporary political processes.
His research has significantly expanded scholarly knowledge of Soviet and post-Soviet Russian policy in the Middle East, tracing its evolution from ideological messianism to the pragmatism of a great power. Drawing on both established sources and documents and on facts he personally uncovered, Vasilyev emphasises the successes of foreign policy when it takes into account the region’s sociopolitical and civilisational (religious) particularities. These themes are reflected in a series of his works devoted to the phenomenon of Wahhabism and the socioeconomic transformation of Saudi Arabia during the “oil era,” establishing his undisputed priority in the study of this subject within Russian, Western, and Arab Oriental studies.
The author's research and scholarly developments have been published in the form of major academic works that have received broad public and professional recognition.
His scholarly authority rests on an immense intellectual legacy that includes more than 300 academic publications, among them several dozen single-author monographs.
