Under the Executive Order, Russia will celebrate Student Detachments’ Day on February 17.
The student detachments began in the Soviet Union in 1959 as a volunteer movement that saw students form teams to spend the holidays working at construction, industrial and agricultural sites. The movement revived in Russia in 2003. More than 200,000 people take part in student detachments today and are involved in projects in construction, transport, the service sector, organising children’s recreation and leisure activities, and helping with the harvest campaign and other work.
