The National Forum Civil Unity: The Regional Aspect took place in Perm on September 17–18. The event was the Perm Territory administration’s initiative and received federal support as well. Regional and municipal officials working in the area of interethnic relations and members of the expert and academic communities from 47 regions took part in the forum.
Implementing the Strategy for Russia’s State Ethnic Relations Policy was the subject of the plenary session. Mr Magomedov outlined the key objectives the President has set in this area. As Mr Magomedov noted, ultimately, it is in the regions themselves that are implementing the strategy, and this demands particular skills on the part of each individual official or specialist, and an ability to assess and respond to changes in interethnic relations.
Governor of Perm Territory Viktor Basargin presented his region’s experience in implementing interethnic policy. Since 1992, the region has made a tremendous effort to preserve languages and cultures and harmonise interethnic relations, especially in the context of the merger between Perm Region and the Komi-Permyak Autonomous District.
Mr Magomedov held a working meeting with Mr Basargin during the trip, with Perm Territory’s socioeconomic development prospects the main subject of discussion. Mr Magomedov outlined a broad range of tasks, including the region’s goals in the area of implementing state interethnic relations policy.
Mr Magomedov also inspected the work of the regional migration centre and visited the Institute of the Komi-Permyak Language, History and Traditional Culture, where he spoke with members of the Komi-Permyak community.
