Beginning of meeting with Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr Prime Minister, colleagues, I am very happy to see you here in Vladivostok.

We constantly stay in contact, and this facilitates the work of our businesses and governments. As I mentioned, 270 Japanese companies operate in Russia. Our trade turnover is beginning to grow steadily after a slump; it has increased by over 16 percent in the first six months of 2017.

I would like to thank you once again for accepting our invitation and for attending the Eastern Economic Forum. We will also be happy to see you at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum next spring, keeping in mind that cooperation between Japan and Russia, of course, exceeds the boundaries of such a huge region as the Russian Far East.

Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe Abe Shinzo Abe Shinzo (retranslated): Mr President,

As I promised last year, I am happy to meet with you here in Vladivostok.

I am happy to note that the agreements reached at our meeting last year are steadily being implemented. I believe that all areas of Russian-Japanese relations continue to develop. Today I am counting on a frank exchange of opinions for unlocking the tremendous potential of Japanese-Russian relations.

I am also ready to discuss the issue of North Korea and other regional tasks to make our significant contribution to ensuring regional peace and stability. I am also counting on a productive discussion to take a step forward, including on the issue of concluding the peace treaty.

I would like to cooperate with you in joint economic activities on the islands and also in providing the maximum possible freedom of movement to the former residents of these islands for the purpose of accomplishing our historical task, specifically, the conclusion of the peace treaty.
