President Vladimir Putin qualified his talks with President of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao as a summit of “breakthrough decisions”. We have taken a major political step and have now settled the border issues between our countries, Mr Putin said following the signature of joint documents.
Russia and China have completed the process of legally delimiting their common state border.
A series of corresponding agreements were signed following the talks between Mr Putin and Mr Hu. The agreements signed include: an additional agreement between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China on the eastern section of the Russian-Chinese state border, a protocol between the governments of Russia and China on Russian and Chinese vessels using the marine territory surrounding the islands of Tarabarov and Bolshoi Ussuriisky, a protocol to the intergovernmental agreement on joint border use of the islands, and a memorandum of the Russian and Chinese governments on application of the existing agreements to the newly delimited sections of the state border between Russia and China.
