Speaking at a press conference following the Eurasian Economic Community summit, President Vladimir Putin said that the summit had adopted a document instructing the organisation’s secretariat and three countries, Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, to take the steps required to put in place the legal foundation for establishing a customs union.
The Eurasian Economic Community leaders also expressed their support for the idea of creating a common energy market within the community and also looked at developing hydroelectric cooperation in Central Asia and nuclear energy cooperation between the community’s members. The summit discussed the idea to create a system of international centres to provide nuclear fuel cycle services under IAEA control.
A decision to make Uzbekistan a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation was also signed during the summit.
