Earth Hour is an annual international environmental protection event organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise the world’s awareness about climate change. The idea behind the event is to have people all around the world voluntarily switch off the lights at the same time for an hour, and turn off outside lighting at buildings that have become different countries’ symbols.
Earth Hour is the biggest mass event in human history. Last year, more than 200 billion people in 162 countries took part, including 20 million Russians.
Russia has taken part in Earth Hour every year since 2009. In 2013, following Vladimir Putin’s decision, the Moscow Kremlin took part in the event for the first time.
