The Expert Commission on Teaching the Russian Language and Literature at the Council for State Policy on Promoting the Russian Language and Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation comprises 89 school teachers of the Russian language and literature, one from each Russian region. The teachers’ expert opinions are also taken into account during the implementation of the Presidential instructions on the development of a single set of state Russian language and literature textbooks for the first to the 11th forms of general schools.
In her opening remarks, Adviser to the President and Council Chair Yelena Yampolskaya stated that the development of Russian language and literature textbooks for high school was in its final stage. At the same time, experts started working on new textbooks for the elementary school (5th to 9th forms).
The academic advisors of the experts who are developing new textbooks said that the teaching aids are based on Russian teaching traditions, taking into account the interaction between education, teaching and upbringing. Significant attention is being given to the aspects that directly influence the development of schoolchildren’s identity, spiritual growth, cultural awareness, patriotism and civic consciousness. The key task is to teach children to love and value the Russian language and literature and to encourage an interest in reading.
The participants exchanged views on the textbooks’ design and contents and proposals for developing their digital versions with reference audio recordings of literary works, as well as for establishing a digital databank of textbook illustrations.
The Adviser to the President added that a Schoolchild Dictionary is being developed alongside the unified set of state textbooks for the first time in years. All these teaching aids must be ready in 2026, and their gradual introduction to the teaching process is to begin on September 1, 2027.
