The message reads, in part:
“The passing of Yury Izrael is a great and irreplaceable loss for Russian science and for all of us. Academician Izrael was an outstanding scientist and public figure who deservedly enjoyed great influence and respect. His undisputed achievements include fundamental works and research, a major school, and a whole group of talented students.”
Mr Izrael passed away in Moscow on January 23, aged 83.
Mr Izrael was a specialist in atmospheric physics, climatology, ecology, oceanography and geography. He studied the meteorological aspects of radioactive and chemical pollution of natural environments, in particular the spread of radioactive products after nuclear weapons tests and after accidents at nuclear installations, including the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. He also put forward a system for limiting emissions of pollutants and harmful impact on the biosphere.
