Among other things, they analysed the political and economic aspects of bilateral cooperation within the Union State, progress on the draft constitution, and the schedule of upcoming contacts at the highest and other levels.

The Presidents also discussed energy, customs and financial partnership. Mr Putin said another tranche, of 1.5 billion roubles, had been allocated to the Central Bank of Belarus to stabilise its currency and prepare for the introduction of common Union State currency.

They made a principled agreement on Russian energy supplies to Belarus the next year. The Russian Government intends to discuss the details at its December 10 meeting on the Russian fuel and energy balance, which Belarusian experts would attend.

The Russian President informed his Belarusian counterpart about his recent contacts with American and European partners and shared his opinion of the prospects of partnership within the CIS. Mr Lukashenko thanked Mr Putin for foreign political support rendered to Belarus on the international scene.

The talks at Volynskoye, President Putin’s Moscow residence, finished with the two leaders’ joint statement and news conference.
