They discussed topical international questions and a wide range of bilateral issues. Particular attention was given to the possibilities of expanding Russian-German cooperation in European and world politics and to the development of relations between Russia and the EU.
They also considered issues of global and pan-European security, U.S. plans to deploy missile defenses in Europe, the CFE [Conventional Armed Forces in Europe] Treaty and NATO enlargement.
A key theme of the meeting was promising areas of Russian-German business cooperation. Among the priorities for bilateral economic cooperation are energy, scientific-technological and industrial cooperation and the development of contacts between small and medium businesses.
Dmitry Medvedev and Angela Merkel agreed to hold the tenth annual round of interstate consultations in autumn 2008 in St Petersburg.
