The President was accompanied by the acting Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit as well as members of the Russian delegation.
7200 Soviet soldiers who died in the battle for Berlin in the last days of the Great Patriotic War in April-May 1945 are buried in the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park.
