Over the 60 years of its existence, the United Nations has seen fierce debate and sharply conflicting views, but it has nevertheless become a unique forum for organising a dialogue between nations on building a safer world, President Vladimir Putin said at the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly. It was from within these walls that came many of the ideas of detente and the common effort to search for and elaborate the founding principles of a new and non-confrontational world order.
In the conditions of the world today, the United Nations’ authority and higher legitimacy enable it to play an irreplaceable and truly unique part in global politics and economic and humanitarian cooperation.
The United Nations and the Security Council should become the main coordination centre for international cooperation in the combat against terrorism and in settling the long-running regional conflicts upon which terrorists and extremists of every variety feed, Mr Putin said.
