Mr Yamashito wished Mr Putin success in his talks in Tokyo and said he hoped that the two sides would be able to find solutions to complex issues.
He also presented the President with a scroll bearing the characters: “The individual and the outside world flower together.”
Mr Yamashito is a member of the Russian-Japanese Council of Wise Men, professor of physical education at the University of Tokai, gold-medallist at the 1984 Olympics and four-times world judo champion.
