The President said he hoped that the library will soon become one of the world’s biggest information portals, and stressed that what makes it so valuable is that anyone in any place with access to the internet can enter the library and use its resources.

Mr Medvedev was issued electronic library card No.1 with an unlimited expiry date.

Before the opening ceremony took place, the President got an overview of the possibilities offered by the library’s electronic reading room, and visited its multimedia and exhibition rooms, and Constitution room.

Mr Medvedev presented the library with a copy of the Russian Constitution used at the presidential inauguration, and a collection of rare books and maps reflecting the history of Russia’s statehood.

The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library is located in the Synod building on St Petersburg’s Senate Square.

Earlier in the day, the President visited Peter and Paul Cathedral, where he laid flowers at Peter the Great’s gravestone.
