In his remarks, the President noted that effective implementation of youth policies must concern not only regional governors and municipal authorities, but also public organisations and business communities.
Dmitry Medvedev emphasised the importance of stimulating youth initiatives in science and technology, creating the necessary conditions for developing and commercialising new ideas. The President noted the need to develop regional programmes of youth support.
In order to get young people more actively involved in Russia’s political and social life, Dmitry Medvedev proposed establishing a single age requirement – 18 years and older – for candidates in municipal government elections in all regions.
The President also talked about the problems of smoking, alcohol and drug use by teenagers. Mr Medvedev noted the need for increasing liability for selling alcoholic beverages to minors, and the necessity to develop sports programmes and promote healthy lifestyles.
