Dmitry Medvedev and Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj laid a wreath at the monument to Marshal Georgy Zhukov in Ulan-Bator, and then took part in a ceremony awarding Russian and Mongolian state decorations to Russian and Mongolian veterans of the Battle of Khalkhin Gol.
Speaking at the decoration ceremony, Mr Medvedev said that this chapter in the two countries’ history, when they fought side by side, will forever remain in the Russian and Mongolian peoples’ memory and they will never forget those who defeated the invaders, defended Mongolia’s territorial integrity, and ultimately helped to vanquish the enemy in World War II.
The Russian and Mongolian presidents also attended a concert organised to celebrate the anniversary.
Later that day, the two leaders visited the site just outside Ulan Bator where the Darhan-2 joint military exercises are taking place, and were briefed by Russian and Mongolian armed forces officials on their progress.
Dmitry Medvedev also attended the Mongolian national holiday – the Naadam festival.
