In discussing the current situation in Syria, the two leaders highly praised the results of the 6th International Meeting on Syria in Astana on September 14–15, 2017, primarily in terms of establishing four de-escalation zones. Both sides expressed readiness for further joint efforts in the interests of achieving a long-term settlement of the Syrian crisis, in particular by strengthening cooperation between the guarantor countries of the Astana process and promoting political negotiations under the auspices of the UN in Geneva.
During an exchange of views on settling the situation around the Iranian nuclear programme, the need to fully implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was noted as an important factor in ensuring regional stability and security.
Some current issues of bilateral cooperation in various fields, as well as cooperation in the Russia-Iran-Azerbaijan format, were also addressed.
