The monument was unveiled on May 7, 1994, the day the country celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Victory of the Vietnamese people over the French colonisers at Dien Bien Phu.
The main part of the Memorial, which is more than 12 metres high, is made of white granite and consists of four adjacent arches with gilded vaults, each facing a cardinal point.
